After years of being an internet marketer I have come to the conclusion of one thing.....there is no secret! Sure, there are things you can do to advance your business but there is not any one secret.

So, what is it that you must do to succeed in internet marketing. Do some activity daily that will either increase visitors to your website or build your mailing list. If you do these then you will eventually succeed. Yes, it takes work to build your business online just as it takes work to build an offline business, what they call a brick and mortor business.

Here are some things you can do to succeed online and bring more visitors to your website and add more subscribers to your list. Steps you will want to take to build your online business.

1. Don't jump around from one idea to another - stick with and focus on one idea! This was one of my hardest things to learn. I always thought I could find something better than what I had. I would have been much better off just to stick with the one thing I started with before moving to something else.

2. Make a plan - Make a plan and follow it daily.

3. Find a system that works and repeat it over and over. If you find a system that works, to make more money just do it again the same way.

4. Do something every day to increase your website traffic or subscribers to your mailing list:

Each day he would let the system run in the background while he was off doing more labor intensive traffic generation methods. His result was a huge amount of traffic on a daily basis but few to no leads generated from that traffic.

His question was basically "Why?"

The answer is simple, not all traffic is created equal and that's a reality to get accustomed to quickly as an internet network marketer. Anytime you use a traffic generation method that produces huge traffic flow but little else that traffic is of pour quality and thus not something to be focused on.

But there is a silver lining in every experience. Just because certain traffic generation methods pan out poorly does not mean that they are to be completely discarded.

My advice to my student was now that you know the quality of traffic you're getting from that resource keep using it. If it doesn't take you any additional effort or cost it is in fact a valid way to generate additional interest.

In other words, there are leads there that you would not get access to unless you use that particular method so keep the system running as there is nothing to be lost from it.

Understand that the more streams of traffic you have coming your way the better and more stable your business grows so keep them coming in my book, but don't place too much emphasis on a traffic generation method that promises you a ragging Amazon river of traffic and gives you a rain drop.

The title tag is arguably the single most important meta tag in regard to on-page optimization. Actually, it’s important on 2 fronts. Both as an SEO metric for ranking, and as one of the first things a potential clicker will see.

Let’s start with the SEO part.

The title tag should be very short. I suggest no more than 65 - 70 characters. It should also be very heavy in your major desired search terms. Keyword research aside, I’ll give a few examples.

We often see titles with a ’sales pitch’ feel to them, often including words that aren’t very useful in ranking factors like “and” and “for” and “the.”

Ex. (bold means search term) SEO Factor the best in Website Optimization and Internet Promotion.

Though containing our major search terms for one of the pages, it also contains a lot of words that are either omitted from results anyway, or taking up precious weight from the search terms. You see, there are a total of ten words in this title, giving each word in the title a 10% weight to it. If we reduce it to be a bit more concise, we are left with a lot more weight.

Ex. SEO Factor - Website Optimization | Internet Promotion

Now, there are 6 words in the title, the majority of which are our search terms. Now, each of the search terms has about a 17% weight. Furthermore, our major terms are getting a 34% weight.

Now for the semantics. There is a huge debate on whether a company should be in the title tag at all, and where it should go. Obviously, the company name can take up some characters, but we believe there is a good reason to have it in there.

So, if someone were to type your company’s name into a search engine, it would be nice to rank. I’m writing a guide about that now, but in the series that is following, I’m going to talk about just a few tips.

1- Approach the Search Engines with a strategy that caters to them.

I don’t just mean get lots of links and use your keywords in the right places. I’m saying that most people try to build towards gaining one major keyword position, and if they lose that spot in an update, their sales and traffic come tumbling down.

Instead of pinning your hopes to one keyword ranking, target a number of visitors, and adjust your strategy accordingly. Find the places where search engines need your listings to make their databases better and they’ll be happy to rank yo.

2- Make all the different parts of your overall traffic strategy beneficial to your search engine strategy.

For example, even though I knew naming a site with the keywords you want in it is out of vogue, that doesn’t mean I can’t still optimize my site for that area. I keep my keywords in mind when I write articles, create press releases, start new sites, start new companies… always.

I also keep linking in mind in every single point of strategy for a new company. With corporate sites, it’s not as easy to get links, or to do link trades. On the other hand, no matter what kind of site you have you can fall back on article marketing and directories.

3- Never stop building your site or your links.

Obviously this is easier if you blog. But if you don’t, you can still keep adding new pages to your site. And who says you can’t have an RSS feed of your updates, whether you’re blogging or not?

For basic, steady link growth, I usually say to submit at least an article a week, and a press release each month. You usually get higher quality links in a faster, more semi-automated way than simply pursuing link trades.

And of course, start out your link pursuit with some of the lesser directories. I started out with a list of about 600 directories - not just for business but for ezines, podcasts, rss feeds, blogging, general web directories, etc.

And I started a specialized directory of my own at that time, with the request that those who submitted link back to me as well. Starting a useful resource is a great way to get links.

Title Tags should be descriptive as opposed to vague to ensure the most accurate and targeted traffic. A lot of traffic is good however if it doesn't lead to an increase in sales then is it really that good?

Title Tags should be unique for every page of your site. If you repeat the same Title for every page then the search engines will group all of your pages as one and you'll be missing out on valuable traffic. Why is it that blogging is such an important SEO Strategy?

I have a theory that you may or may not agree with. I believe that blogs rule on the Search Engines due to one main reason, fresh content. There are endless debates among SEO professionals over whether quality content or back links are the most important to Google. These discussions miss the point if they are talking about quality content without taking into consideration content freshness.

Quality fresh content will win every time over and above any other consideration in Search Engine Optimization. The freshness of content is something that Google can judge quite easily whenever a web page is reindexed. It merely compares the current content with the index of the content from the last visit. I would submit, that the Google Spiders will require a much more sophisticated algorithm to judge quality content than freshness, and this is the main reason why freshness is all important.

After all, human editors frequently disagree concerning content quality. How could software robots be any different ? Any robust SEO Strategy should be based on not only quality content but fresh content as well. I believe that that fresh good quality content will win out over stale excellent quality content. It seems that the Google Spiders like fresh food even more than Subway Sandwiches does !

CNN is even ahead of Google News for a “news” search. Pretty amazing isn’t it, since Google News is indexing every one else’s news ? The New York Times is listed on page 4, and where is the Wall Street Journal? It is hard to find. I went to the first 10 pages of results and couldn’t find the Wall Street Journal anywhere. Not to dish CNN at all, but if Google Page Rank were only concerned with content quality, don’t you think that the prestigious New York Times and Wall Street Journal should have at least as high a page rank as CNN ?

What about incoming links? Another SEO philosophy says that back links are the most important factor to achieve Page Rank and search engine position. Let’s look at incoming or back links using Google’s Advanced Search.

CNN – 205,000
The New York Times – 702,000
The Wall Street Journal – 66,000

If back links were the main criteria, then certainly The New York Times would be have the highest page rank, and not CNN. Note: one reason that that Google may be reporting such a small number of back links for the Wall Street Journal, is because much of the Wall Street Journal’s content is subscription-based, which requires a user name and password, that could stop the Google spiders.

The approximate size of each of the sites is reported by Google Advanced Search, as CNN – 1.3 million pages, The New York Times – 930,000 pages, and The Wall Street Journal – 859,000 pages. Sites of this magnitude will most likely garner a high page rank on Google, due not only to content, but shear size.

If you do a Google search for news, and variations such as financial news, business news, current news, CNN comes up number one every time. Why does this happen? It is safe to say that it is due to fresh content.

CNN’s site is updated on a minute by minute basis with content, unlike either the New York Times site or the Wall Street Journal’s site which are probably updated on an hourly or even a daily basis. Google simply loves fresh content, and search results would seem to contend that CNN is one of the absolute masters of fresh content on the Internet.

From this simple comparison, we can see how dramatically fresh content affects page rank and search engine position.

I ran across a rather fascinating SEO strategy article recently, called "Where the bots stop". This article focuses on the question of how deep spiders dig when they index a web page.

It was found through what looks like some pretty good testing, that it varies quite a bit between the different search engines. Yahoo seems to see only the first 210k of text on a page. Google sees approximately 520k, and MSN sees a whopping 1030k of text.

Admittedly that is a very large amount of text, probably more than most web sites would ever put on a single page. Let’s consider what the spider sees, when it looks at a blog like the one Butch Hamilton has created here. The titles for all of the blog archives are listed on the right. There are less than 100 posts now, but eventually, there could be thousands of posts and their corresponding titles listed as well.

I brief test of several popular blogs indicated that most had text from 10k to around 30k. This leaves plenty of room for additional links, and content before the spider limit would be reached.

Each post on a blog can be like an article, with it’s own title and content. This is the very epitome of what search engine spiders are looking for. On a typical blog you find organic links galore, fresh content updated on a continuous basis, and an easy to access format that search engines love. Fresh content is clearly the most significant factor in search engine positioning, and an essential element of any SEO Strategy. Happy Blogging!
